Senator Kim Emphasizes Need for More Affordable Housing at Nomination Hearing for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development
January 16, 2025
WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, Senator Andy Kim elevated New Jerseyans’ concerns about rising housing costs during the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs’ Nomination Hearing for U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development nominee, Eric Scott Turner. The Senator focused his questioning on finding tangible solutions that address the cost of housing, incentivize the building of affordable, entry-level homes, and help unlock the American Dream of owning a home for all generations.
“I went back to some folks, some constituents in New Jersey, and asked them what are the top issues, what are the things they want to raise, and overwhelmingly…is about housing, high costs,” said Senator Kim. “In particular, I heard from a young man who said he doesn’t ever think he’ll be able to afford a house. The level of pessimism, especially among youth right now is so high. I just want to have something tangible to bring back to him…I’d like to have a sense of something more granular.”
Senator Kim’s questions to Mr. Turner also focused on the need to formally authorize the Community Development Block Grant for Disaster Recovery to help deliver streamlined relief and resources to communities in need, including New Jersey communities impacted by extreme storms and flooding. Additionally, he highlighted working together to ensure the complete removal of lead from our nation’s drinking water and homes.
